“Modern life is destroying traditional cultures. To what extent do you agree?”Model answer
300 wordsP1Globalisation, digital connectivity and rapid economic development have undeniably altered the way billions of people live, and there is a widely held view that traditional cultures are being eroded as a result. I largely agree with this position, though I would argue the process is more complex than simple destruction.
P2The pressures on traditional cultures are real and well documented. As satellite television, social media and international brands penetrate even remote communities, younger generations increasingly adopt the languages, fashions and values they see broadcast from wealthier nations. In many parts of West Africa and South-East Asia, for instance, local festivals and craft traditions are being abandoned by young people who regard them as signs of backwardness rather than heritage. Economic migration compounds this: when rural populations move to cities in search of work, the tightly knit social structures that sustained oral traditions, religious ceremonies and communal practices are often dispersed beyond recovery.
P3Yet the picture is not entirely bleak. In some countries, modernity has actually given traditional cultures wider reach and longevity. Digital recording technology preserves endangered languages and folk music that would otherwise vanish with their last speakers, while tourism generates the income communities need to maintain historical sites and crafts. Ireland's revival of the Irish language and New Zealand's Maori renaissance demonstrate that determined collective effort, supported by modern communication tools, can sustain and even reinvigorate traditions.

P4The crucial variable is agency. When communities choose how to engage with the modern world, traditions tend to adapt and survive; when change is imposed through colonialism, forced assimilation or economic desperation, it tends to erase them.
P5In conclusion, I agree that modern life poses a serious threat to traditional cultures, but the threat is not inevitable; deliberate policy and community choice can preserve much of what would otherwise be lost.
