Understanding the criterion

About Grammatical Range & Accuracy.

IELTS grammar assessment considers sentence variety, control and punctuation across the complete response. These drills isolate useful practice points: agreement, articles, tense choices and clause connections. The band labels describe a practice focus; the item total is a drill result. Use what you learn in a full essay and review the feedback in context.

Do I lose marks for every grammar mistake in IELTS Writing?
Grammar is assessed across the whole response. Examiners consider range, accuracy, punctuation and the effect of errors on communication. Check recurring mistakes as useful practice priorities; a single error does not establish a whole-task band.
Are simple correct sentences better than complex ones with errors?
Aim for sentence variety that you can control. Simple and complex forms serve different purposes. Practise expressing causes, contrasts and conditions clearly, then check accuracy across your whole response.
Does punctuation really affect my IELTS band?
Yes. Punctuation is part of Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Practise clear clause boundaries and correct sentence connections, including replacing comma splices with a suitable conjunction, semicolon or full stop.

Drills teach the rule. Essays prove it.
